One of the trickiest things that NASA's Opportunity rover does on Mars is take a look at itself?? but for the six-wheeled rover, it's been a vital part of its eight-year-plus mission on the Red Planet.
This picture illustrates why the occasional once-over is so important: Because Opportunity relies on solar power, mission controllers back on Earth need to know how much dust is accumulating on the rover's solar panels. It's been a while since the dust has been swept off by Martian winds, and so there's quite a bit of dust covering the power-generating cells right now.
The dust hasn't been so much of a concern during the previous southern winters that Opportunity has spent in Meridiani Planum on the Red Planet. But as winter approaches this time, NASA has decided to position the rover on a north-facing slope so that it can soak up as much of the sun's weak rays as possible. That's a strategy that the rover team employed in the past with Opportunity's twin, the Spirit rover, which now lies moribund in Gusev Crater on the other side of the planet.
Opportunity is conducting research in place as it sits on the north-facing slope of a ridge known as Greeley Haven, on the rim of the 14-mile-wide Endeavour Crater. The rover's going to be there for a while: Mars' southern winter solstice takes place on March 30, and the planet's seasons last roughly twice as long as Earth's. So we'll be seeing a lot of the rover's surroundings at Greeley Haven ? including the current focus of its scientific studies, a rock called Amboy.

And here's a real treat from space artist Don Davis: A painstakingly assembled mosaic of imagery from Opportunity, looking east-southeast over Endeavour Crater to the far side just before sunset. You can see Opportunity's dust-covered solar panels and color-calibration sundial in the foreground. In the distance, you can see the long shadows cast on the crater floor ? including the slight bump of a shadow that could well have been cast by Opportunity itself. It's a picture to marvel over, and astronomer/educator Stuart Atkinson does his fair share of marveling on the "Road to Endeavour" website. Are mobile bar codes changing the way consumers shop? - Mobile ...
Although the technology is still emerging, it certainly has the opportunity to change the way consumers shop. Brands and marketers are beginning to see the potential of mobile bar codes and are using them in their marketing strategies.
?The immediacy of being able to purchase something you see advertised in a magazine or other out-of-home signage allows consumers to conveniently purchase the product on-the-spot, without having to search or step foot into a store,? said Nicole Skogg, CEO of SpyderLynk, New York .
?We believe that the use of mobile bar codes overall, especially mcommerce-enabled bar codes, will continue to grow as consumers become more familiar with the technology,? she said. ?Adoption rates will also continue to grow as marketers think more strategically about the use of bar codes and become more focused on delivering value.
?Well-executed, mobile bar codes drive consumer consideration and help position a brand as relevant and enticing. Poorly executed mobile bar codes, at best, serve to frustrate consumers and, at worst, are ignored all together.?
On the go shopping
Last year, Toys R Us rolled out a virtual store that let consumers scan QR codes featured on billboards and shop the company?s 2011 Hot Toy List.
On-the-go commuters and travelers in the New York metro area were encouraged to take part in the initiative. The billboards were located in John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and nearly 40 NJ Transit Stations feature the showcased items (see story).
Most recently, Glamour unveiled its Apothecary Wall that features products from Unilever and Juicy Couture.
The Apothecary Wall has SpyderLynk Snaptags next to each product. Users are encouraged to download Glamour?s Friends & Fans iPhone app to scan the mobile bar code and buy the featured product right then and there.
?Placement is critical to success in adoption rates,? Ms. Skogg said. ?One of our key messages to our clients is that the placement of a mobile bar code will drive usage.
?Engaged media such as magazines, email, online and street teams at events will drive higher response rates than passive media such as event displays and out-of-home signage like a billboard ? which is typically passed by rather than viewed from a closer proximity while standing still, making it difficult for consumers to engage,? she said. ?There are much more creative ways to deploy bar codes with the Apothecary Wall being an excellent example.
?Glamour?s innovative use of the Apothecary Wall allowed them to extend the reach of the magazine, while making it fun for consumers to shop on-the-spot. By recreating a shopping isle with a 2D design, the Apothecary Wall was intuitive, approachable and easy for consumers to interact with.?
Mobile sophistication
There is an increase in the sophistication of mobile bar codes and their implementation compared to last year.
Brands and marketers are incorporating mobile bar codes across their entire marketing mix.
This comprehensive approach to mobile is giving marketers the ability to model, segment and better target consumers.
Mobile commerce-enabled mobile bar codes give retailers the opportunity to extend the reach of their bricks-and-mortar retail outlets.
?We are beginning to see mobile bar codes have an impact on the retail experience however, there is still much consumer education and awareness needed for mobile bar codes to really change the way consumers shop,? said Laura Marriott, CEO of NeoMedia Technologies, Boulder, CO.
?Many major global brands and retailers, such as Calvin Klein, McDonalds, Macy?s and Target, have helped to increase this awareness by taking advantage of the ability mobile bar codes provide to bring engagement and interactivity to a consumer?s experience with a brand,? she said.
?By simply scanning the mobile bar code, consumers can instantly access an unlimited amount of data on the brand and product of interest ? from product information and reviews to special offers ? but further integration with a brand or retailer?s existing loyalty, CRM or couponing implementations will also help to drive consumer uptake.?
According to Ms. Marriott, mobile bar codes provide an easy, instant means to connect with the brand.
?I believe we will see significant uptake of these services,? Ms. Marriott said. ?Mobile bar codes still have a bit of the newness factor and are fun to engage with, which definitely also helps to drive interactions.
?And making the shopping experience even more accessible to consumers via mobile bar codes, is definitely a winning combination,? she said. ?We do expect to see these types of initiatives becoming more commonplace in the next year, which will help consumers become more comfortable with using their mobile to scan and buy on the go.
?In 2012 we should expect to see a rise in mobile bar code scanning implementations resulting in greater consumer participation, expanded loyalty initiatives and an overall enhanced consumer experience when in-store ? much more than a simple resolution to a Web URL.? Coupled with this, we expect to see hardware solutions in retail support mobile bar code scanning on a much wider basis in 2012.?

?Virtual shops are a growing phenomenon which can really enable someone to buy from anywhere,? he said.

PORTLAND, Ore As part of a national collaboration, Oregon Health & Science University researchers are studying specially bred mice that are more like humans than ever before when it comes to genetic variation. Through these mice, the researchers hope to better understand and treat an infectious disease that plagues us year in and year out: the flu.
The scientists aim to determine why some people suffer serious illness and even death when infected with influenza while others suffer only mild to moderate symptoms. The research is published in a special joint issue of the journals Genetics and G3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, both publications of the Genetics Society of America.
The research was conducted within the Pacific Northwest Regional Center for Excellence (PNWRCE) for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, a consortium of investigators with extensive expertise, and basic and translational research capacity directed at a broad range of pathogens. The researchers are studying mice from the Collaborative Cross Program. Because these mice more closely reflect the genetic variation of humans, they may be the key to understanding some of today's most common, and most complex, diseases. In this case, the specially bred mice were used to study the varying immune response to the annual influenza outbreak.
In this research project, the scientists studied 44 groups of flu-infected mice that varied genetically. Due to this variation, the mouse reaction to influenza varied greatly, just as it does in the human population. The researchers then noted genetic differences that may have caused the variety of disease responses. Their ongoing work is to more clearly identify which genes cause these differences.
"Each year, annual influenza epidemics result in about 3 million to 5 million cases of severe illness," explained Shannon McWeeney, Ph.D., an associate professor of biostatistics and bioinformatics and head of the Division of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at OHSU. "We see a broad spectrum of response to influenza infection ranging from patients with minor symptoms to the estimated 250,000 to 500,000 deaths worldwide."
"We want to understand what genetic factors influence this wide-ranging response. More importantly, with a better understanding of the genetic influence of disease response, we believe we can help in the development of better, safer vaccines that can target the most vulnerable population: the sick, elderly and young. We also want to determine if the genetic factors that impact flu response also play a role in the varying responses to other diseases. If so, this new research method could have a much broader impact," McWeeney said.

PORTLAND, Ore As part of a national collaboration, Oregon Health & Science University researchers are studying specially bred mice that are more like humans than ever before when it comes to genetic variation. Through these mice, the researchers hope to better understand and treat an infectious disease that plagues us year in and year out: the flu.
The scientists aim to determine why some people suffer serious illness and even death when infected with influenza while others suffer only mild to moderate symptoms. The research is published in a special joint issue of the journals Genetics and G3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, both publications of the Genetics Society of America.
The research was conducted within the Pacific Northwest Regional Center for Excellence (PNWRCE) for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, a consortium of investigators with extensive expertise, and basic and translational research capacity directed at a broad range of pathogens. express how sick and tired they are of this thing happening.Car accidents just happen. Right?
"It was amazing how many people would say, 'I guess it was just his
time,'" said Jeffrey Runge, a former emergency room doctor who was
head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2001
to 2005. His quote comes from a USA Today interview from 2006, in
which he talked about teen driving deaths and how preventable many of
them are.But it's not just teen driving deaths that are far too common, and far
too accepted. Although fatalities in the U.S. have been on a steady
decline since laws mandating seatbelt use were enacted, that's not the
case globally. According to the Global Road Safety Partnership, every
day around the world, enough people to fill 10 jumbo jets die in car
accidents. Every day. That's like losing the entire population of Fair
Lawn, N.J., on Monday, then losing everyone living in Beverly Hills,

Fla., on Wednesday. And so on.My entire career has been colored by car accidents. I can't ignore
them. When I hear ambulance sirens, I remember cracked windshields
covered in blood. When I see a story in the paper about someone dying
in a crash, I think about those moments when the police car arrives at
their home to notify the family the driver has died. I've spent a lot
of time talking to families about the deceased's final days or hours,
but when I hear about fatal car accidents, I think about the driver's
last moments. The moments no one witnessed. Were they panicked? Did
they feel pain? Did their radio keep playing while their world was
collapsing?And on Friday, a car accident killed Jeff, a man I hold in high regard
and a mentor to many young journalists who crossed his path, including
myself. He hit a patch of ice while driving along a highway in
northern Michigan. His car skidded into the path of a semi-truck.
A lot of people are devastated by the news. Jeff's Facebook page is
filled with an outpouring of kind words and memories. He adored his
wife and three daughters. Their lives will never be the same.I couldn't help this weekend but think about the first person I knew
who died from a car accident. Her name was Jackie Curcio. She was
gorgeous and smart and friendly -- the kind of girl who intimidates
other girls just because she can't help but be amazing. In 1993, she
was hit by a drunk driver on her way home one night from her
boyfriend's house. We were 20.I started writing for the college newspaper a few months after she
died, and I named my column "Watershed," after a line in an Indigo
Girls' song that hit me in the gut: "Twisted guardrails on the
highway, broken glass on the cement. The ghost of someone's tragedy;
how recklessly my time has been spent."A few years later, I found myself as a young reporter standing out
beside those twisted guardrails. I spent cold nights, rainy rush hours
and some beautiful spring days standing at the side of the road,
collecting details for stories. Eventually, it became too much.Now I write about the auto industry from a business perspective, and
although the safety aspect is just a slice of what I do, it is what I
am most passionate about.I have some ideas of what needs fixing. Driver education in this
country needs a complete overhaul. It has been underfunded,
unregulated and mismanaged for far too long. Anyone who took driver's
ed in the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s learned how to drive in the dark ages
of American driver's ed.And the country could use a massive public education outreach
initiative to re-teach the public about what it means to be a good
driver. Something similar to the campaigns that took us out of the Mad
Men era and into a world that knows cigarettes are bad and drunk
driving is worse.Freak accidents happen on the road, and so it is impossible to
eliminate all road fatalities. There will always be times when patches
of ice turn into disaster. Still, safety experts know there are lots
of things that can be done to bring the number of fatalities down.I refuse to accept the idea that fatal car accidents are just the
price we pay for a mobile society. But it's not an issue that people
seem to be rallying around. Sometimes when I talk to people about car
safety, particularly parents of new teen drivers, I can see their eyes
glaze over. They don't want to know."At some point, public opinion will change," said Andrew Pearce, chief
executive of GRSP at a safety conference in Cincinnati this fall.
"Culture is not a fixed entity. It changes with time and stimulus from
society."For Jackie and Jeff's memories, I will continue to be part of that
stimulus for as long as I can.
